The written word is a powerful thing. And those that work to harness that power are often rewarded by scholarship providers.
There are plenty of scholarships for writers available to students, whether the interest is in journalism, stories or writing of any other type.
But, such scholarship aren't just limited to students with studies related to writing. They are also available to students who are able to communicate effectively through the written word. A true writer - a great writer - can write about absolutely anything. Even a "boring" scholarship essay is a challenge that a writer can take on to express oneself.
Scholarship providers know that writing takes talent and look to recognize such talent with awards and opportunities.

EngineerGirl Essay Contest
Deadline: 3/01/15
Available to: High School Freshman through High School Senior
Award Amount: $500
Provided by the National Academy of Engineering, the EngineerGirl Essay Contest is available to male and female students in grades three through twelve.
To enter, you must submit an essay that describes one technology used in a sport that you enjoy and how different types of engineers contributed to its design and manufacture.
No essay or minimum GPA required.

Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge
Deadline: March 13, 2015
Available to: High School Freshman through College Freshman
Award Amount: $5,000
The Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge is open to high school students in New York City, the Washington, D.C. metro area, Delaware /Delmarva Peninsula, and Southern New Jersey.
To be considered, you must write and illustrate a children's book that addresses the topics of tolerance, inclusion and diversity.
Entrants are encouraged to create innovative ways to teach tolerance to young children, as well as gain new insights into these issues for themselves.
Students may work individually or in teams of up to four. Books must be between 16 and 24 pages and each page must include text and image(s).

Si Burick Journalism Scholarship

Available to: High School Senior through College Freshman
Award Amount: $2,500
The Si Burick Journalism Scholarship is available to high school seniors from the Miami Valley who plan to pursue a degree in journalism.

Haiku Society of America
Nicholas A. Virgilio Memorial Haiku Competition

Available To: Grades 7 through 12
Award Amount: Varies
Provided by the Haiku Society of America, the Nicholas A. Virgilio Memorial Haiku Competition is available to students in grades 7 through 12.
You must submit up to three original haiku poems to be eligible for this award.

National WWII Museum Essay Contest
Deadline: 3/31/15
Available to: High School Freshman through College Freshman
Award Amount: $1,000
The National WWII Museum Essay Contest is open to high school students in the United States, U.S. territories, and military bases.
To be considered, you must submit an essay of up to 1,000-words that answers the following question: "How do you define a hero?"

Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journalism

Available to: College Freshman through Graduate Student, Year 5

Provided by the New York Foundation for Architecture, the Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journalism is available to students who have written an article in a current publication focused on design issues.
To be eligible for this award, you must be enrolled in an NAAB accredited school of architecture or a related program such as art history, interior design, urban studies or landscape architecture.

Matters of Life and Death Scholarship Writing Contest

Available to: High School Junior through College Freshman
Award Amount: $2,000
The Matters of Life and Death Scholarship Writing Contest is available to college - bound high school juniors and seniors in California.
To be considered, you must submit a maximum 1000 - word essay that answers the following question: "What does your community need to know to support a statewide Death with Dignity law?"

Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship

Available to: College Freshman through Graduate Student, Year 5
Award Amount: $750
The Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate and graduate students attending an accredited two- or four-year college/university.
To be eligible, you must be pursuing a career in sports journalism, with a special interest in golf, golf course architecture, golf course turf grass management / greens superintendent, or professional golf management.
Students involved in amateur college golf may also apply. In addition, you must demonstrate academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, and involvement in golf-related activities.

The William S. Maulsby Memorial Scholarship is available to students at the University of Iowa, School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
You must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and plan to teach high school journalism to be eligible for this award.

MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest

Sponsored by the Marine Corps Gazette, the MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest is open to all Marines on active duty and to members of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve.
